Sony also introduced captain cards designed to add some flavor to the themed-team trend that has become popular with the sports game Collector’s Mode. There are also core cards that can be used during any set throughout the year. ![]() Users get only one wild card option per set. However, cards that users have attached specifically to previous seasons can be carried over via the new Wild Card option, which allows users to hold on to their favorite options throughout the life cycle of this year’s game. Those cards serve as chase items for 6-8 weeks until a new set is issued and the cycle repeats. With its new sets concept, Sony is releasing 99-composite rated cards at launch. In this year’s edition of Diamond Dynasty, Sony introduced an entirely new approach to Collector’s Mode. History buffs and those who appreciate the plight, struggle and success of pioneering black Americans will find much to appreciate in this experience above and beyond the DD items that are unlocked upon completion. Once the user completes all eight storylines-which include a 90-overall-rated version of each player-they receive a 95-overall-rated Buck O’Neill card for use in DD. Each episode has an objective that advances you through each series and unlocks several Negro League-related items that can be used in Diamond Dynasty. Episodes are almost always preceded by a short introduction (30–60 seconds) narrated by Negro league president Bob Kendrick. Users of most MLB The Show will recognize the format from previous games. The storyline takes users on an educational journey through the careers and influence of eight influential players in the Negro leagues: Buck O’Neal, Martin Dihigo, John Donaldson, Hilton Smith, Jackie Robinson, Rube Foster, Hank Thompson, and Satchel Paige.Įach player’s story is told in a series of moments called episodes. I talked to Sony San Diego Studios’ Ramon Russell-one of the mode’s biggest inspirations and supporters-about the work that went into making it a reality. In many ways, the most prominent new addition to this year’s edition of MLB The Show is the Negro Leagues – Storyline feature. Negro Leagues, which I’ll talk about shortly, also has unique audio and visual presentation related to the genre and experience. Regional packages include location-specific overlays and monoliths, bringing home the concept of a home network like Marquee for the Chicago Cubs or TBS for the Atlanta Braves. Users can now choose between a show theme or a regional package for each game. The visual presentation for the game has also seen some changes. ![]() The game also includes signature crowd chants for all 30 MLB teams. Other baseball sounds have also been worked on, such as slide, mitt pop, and more. The game has been perfectly designed to communicate the different levels of contact made with the baseball. Sony has also taken steps to enhance the sound effects and audio presentation. The simulation settings are mostly maintained to emulate the randomness that occurs in real MLB games. Also, more difficult contact would be rewarded with a hit, and fewer instances of weak contact would yield success. For example, competitive settings are less favorable when it comes to making contact with pitches when the plate-coverage indicator is barely touching the baseball. In an effort to appease the competitive community, the settings for all online head-to-head matchups have been tuned to reduce the randomness involved in the simulation setting. Another notable change is what Sony has done to differentiate the different game genres. While this isn’t a change most users are describing as game-changing, it is something consumers will recognize when they first play the game. The size of the sweet spot is decided by the fielder’s rating and position (angle, body position, etc.). The performance of the throwing meter has a longer delay, and the sweet spot on the meter moves and shrinks to add some challenge and variation. Users who didn’t get a chance to participate in the Play Test will immediately see the changes in fielding – especially the throwing.
